The Central Axis of Beijing starts in the south of the city from the Yongding Gate, running through the Zhengyang Gate, Tian'anmen Square, The Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, and ending at the Drum and Bell Towers in the north. The city was first built upon this central axis during the Yuan Dynasty and developed over the years.
